How to Export Microsoft Teams Chat History in 2026
Teams Chat Backup v6.1 uses a viewer-first workflow: it saves supported Teams web chats and channels to a searchable local Viewer before you choose a portable export. This guide replaces the older screenshot and Turbo Mode instructions.
Install the current extension
The Chrome Web Store currently lists version 6.1. You do not need a separate Google sign-in for the extension.
The current backup workflow
Discover and select
The popup lists supported chats and channels from the current Teams web session. You can select one conversation or queue several.
Scan the visible history
The extension scrolls through the selected conversation, expands supported replies, and records messages with author and timestamp context.
Save to the local Viewer
Messages are stored in the extension's IndexedDB database. Long backups create checkpoints so an interrupted run can preserve progress.
Export when needed
Review the local copy first, then download a styled PDF, self-contained HTML page, or searchable TXT transcript.
Which format should you use?
A readable document for sharing or printing.
HTML
A self-contained browser file that preserves structure and links.
TXT
A lightweight transcript for search and text processing.
Free and Pro limits
- Free: up to three full chat backups, local Viewer access, and individual PDF, HTML, or TXT exports with the free watermark.
- Pro: unlimited backups, no watermark, lifetime access, and bulk import or export of the backup library as ZIP.
Privacy and permissions
Conversation content stays local
Backups are stored in the extension's browser database. Files are written to your device only when you export them.
Access is requested when needed
Teams access starts when you click the extension. Downloads and RevenueCat license checks are optional prompts, and license checks contain no chat content.
Troubleshooting
- A chat is missing: open it in Teams first, expand the navigation if it is collapsed, then reopen the extension. Favorites are under active investigation for one reported Teams layout.
- Older messages are missing: enable Long Chat Mode and keep the Teams tab focused while the extension loads older history.
- A channel has hidden replies: expand the reply thread in Teams and run the backup again if the automatic expander cannot reach it.
Record-keeping note
This extension creates a user-controlled copy of content visible in Teams. It is not a legal-hold, eDiscovery, retention-policy, or certified compliance system. Use your organization's approved Microsoft 365 process when an authoritative export is required.
