What is the Chat Viewer?

The Chat Viewer is a built-in web application that displays your backed-up Teams conversations in a familiar, Teams-like interface. Unlike static PDF or text exports, the Chat Viewer is fully interactive:

Chat Viewer Features

1. Search Toolbar

Powerful full-text search across all your backups with real-time results, highlighting, navigation between matches, and keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl/Cmd + F).

2. Date Filtering

Jump to specific points in chat history with a calendar picker that automatically scrolls to the first message on or after the selected date.

3. Starred Messages

Mark important messages for quick access. Click the star icon on any message to mark it, then filter by starred to show only important messages. Stars persist across sessions.

4. Message Editing

Edit message content while tracking changes. All previous versions are automatically saved, and you can view the edit timeline with timestamps and revert to any previous version.

5. Soft Delete

Remove messages without permanently losing them. Soft-deleted messages are hidden but can be restored anytime. Toggle visibility to show or hide deleted messages in the viewer.

How to Use the Chat Viewer

Opening the Viewer

1. Click the Teams Chat Backup extension icon
2. Click "View Backed Files" button
3. The Chat Viewer opens in a new tab

Navigating Chats

The left sidebar lists all backed-up chats with chat name and message count. The right panel displays the selected chat messages in a Teams-like layout.

Import/Export Functionality

Export to ZIP

Archive your backups outside the browser. Click Export, choose "Export as ZIP", and all chats are bundled into a .tcb file that you can save to cloud storage or an external drive.

Import from ZIP

Restore backups on another computer. Click Import, select your .tcb ZIP file, and chats are merged into the existing database with automatic duplicate detection.
